Set up Shopify Agentic Storefronts from Sales channels → Agentic in Shopify admin. Start by reviewing the default Allow Shopify to manage for me setting, then verify product eligibility, channel-specific data paths, store policies, checkout behavior, and reporting.
The important distinction is that Agentic Storefronts is not one identical checkout integration across every AI channel. ChatGPT currently acts as a discovery-focused referrer for eligible Shopify stores. Microsoft Copilot and Google AI Mode and Gemini can offer Shopify-powered direct checkout when the store, product, and shopper are eligible. Google discovery also uses the Google & YouTube sales channel rather than the same Catalog control used for ChatGPT and Copilot.
Shopify’s current documentation says Agentic Storefronts is active by default for eligible stores. That makes setup an audit and control task as much as an activation task.
Start with the current channel map
This table reflects Shopify’s documentation verified on July 12, 2026.
| Channel | Product-discovery path | Current purchase path | Important boundary |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Shopify Catalog | The merchant’s online-store checkout, shown in a ChatGPT in-app browser or a new browser tab | Shopify exposes no ChatGPT direct-checkout toggle; store and product eligibility still apply |
| Microsoft Copilot | Shopify Catalog | Shopify-powered direct checkout when eligible, or referral to the online store when direct checkout is off | Current direct checkout is for US-based shoppers and has feature limitations |
| Google AI Mode and Gemini | Google & YouTube sales channel syncing to Google Merchant Center | Shopify-powered direct checkout when eligible, or referral to the online store when direct checkout is off | The Shopify integration is in early access; direct checkout currently displays only to US-based shoppers |
This is why “turn on AI shopping” is too broad a setup instruction. Discovery, checkout, geography, product support, and analytics differ by channel.
1. Check the store and product prerequisites
For the named channels, Shopify currently requires:
- products that are eligible for Shopify Catalog;
- agreement to the Shopify Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms;
- completed Terms of service, Privacy policy, and Return and refund policy;
- a supported selling market for the relevant channel.
Channel requirements then diverge.
For ChatGPT, Shopify currently says the store must sell to customers in the United States, although the store may be based elsewhere. For Copilot, the store must sell to US customers for direct checkout. For Google AI Mode and Gemini direct checkout, Shopify currently requires the store to be based in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, or Canada and to sell to customers in one of those countries. The Google integration itself remains early access and is not available to every store.
Do not convert those current rules into a timeless eligibility checklist. Confirm them in the live Shopify channel pages before changing a production setup:
2. Decide who controls future channel enrollment
Open Sales channels → Agentic and inspect Allow Shopify to manage for me.
When the setting is on, Shopify says available channels can access the applicable product source, supported direct checkout is activated, and the store can be enrolled automatically in future Agentic Storefronts channels.
Turn it off when your team needs to approve channels individually. Manual control lets you review Catalog access and direct checkout separately where those controls exist.
The decision is a governance question:
- Who can approve a new external sales channel?
- Which team reviews channel terms and data sharing?
- Which checkout customizations must be tested before direct checkout is enabled?
- Who owns product-data and policy accuracy after enrollment?
- What evidence would trigger a channel opt-out?
Leaving Shopify’s default in place can be reasonable. Manual control can also be reasonable for a regulated catalog, complex checkout, or formal channel-approval process. The correct setting depends on the merchant’s operating constraints, not a universal preference for more or fewer channels.
3. Verify each discovery path
ChatGPT and Copilot through Shopify Catalog
Eligible products are made available to these channels through Shopify Catalog. Shopify says Catalog structures fields such as title, description, options, images, price, and availability. Products with custom data or grouping logic may need Shopify Catalog Mapping so the correct fields reach the channel.
For ChatGPT, an eligible Shopify merchant does not create a separate OpenAI feed for this Catalog-based discovery path. That does not guarantee every product will appear. Shopify eligibility, OpenAI commerce policies, channel relevance, and other presentation logic still apply.
Google AI Mode and Gemini through Google & YouTube
For Google’s surfaces, install and configure the Google & YouTube sales channel. Shopify currently instructs merchants to enable automatic product and shipping-information syncing so the product and store data flow to Google Merchant Center.
Keep the source record and Merchant Center record aligned. Product titles, identifiers, variants, prices, availability, shipping, and policies should resolve to the same offer the shopper sees on the product page and at checkout.
Use the platform-neutral product data checklist for the underlying audit, then use the Google-specific guide for conversational attributes.
4. Review policies, disclosures, and product exclusions
Completed policy pages are an eligibility requirement, not publication decoration. Confirm that the actual operation matches the written terms:
- return and refund conditions;
- shipping regions, methods, and restrictions;
- subscription or renewal terms;
- warranty scope;
- product-specific safety or legal disclosures;
- prohibited or restricted-product rules for each channel.
Shopify currently instructs merchants using the named channels to include relevant legal disclosures within the first 6,000 characters of a product description. Treat that as a current channel rule and recheck it before implementation.
Do not assume that removing a product from Shopify Catalog makes it invisible to every AI system. Shopify notes that products can still be found through external crawling and indexing. Conversely, setting a product to Unlisted has broader consequences: it can remove the product from Shopify Catalog surfaces, Shop, sitemaps, the online store’s search, and traditional search engines.
Catalog distribution and public-web discoverability are different controls.
5. Test direct checkout separately from discovery
Turning off direct checkout for Google or Copilot does not necessarily remove product discovery. It changes where the transaction is completed.
Before leaving direct checkout active, test the purchase patterns the store depends on. Shopify currently documents limitations for Google and Copilot direct checkout that include:
- subscriptions, product bundles, customizable products, and B2B-only products;
- some checkout blocks, including upsells, custom fields, loyalty experiences, and informational blocks;
- client-side Google Analytics and custom pixels;
- local delivery, pickup in store, and pickup points;
- checkout flows that require the customer to sign in.
Some Shopify Functions and discounts can still run, but a function being supported does not prove that every app block or storefront customization will appear.
Use two test paths for each channel:
- Discovery path: Can an eligible product be found and represented correctly?
- Purchase path: Does the shopper reach the expected checkout with the required payment, delivery, discount, consent, and policy behavior?
For ChatGPT on Shopify, the current purchase path uses the merchant’s online-store checkout. OpenAI separately documents that some eligible products and merchants may show Instant Checkout. That general statement does not change the Shopify-specific flow described above, and neither implementation should be generalized to all ChatGPT shopping.
6. Review data sharing and customer handling
Shopify says AI channels can receive product data such as titles, descriptions, images, price, and availability. When a shopper places an order through a supported direct-checkout channel, the channel receives the customer and order details required for that transaction.
Shopify also says these channels do not receive the merchant’s full customer database, unrelated order history, or private Shopify admin data through Agentic Storefronts.
Document the boundary for your own teams:
| Data class | Review question |
|---|---|
| Product data | Which fields and custom mappings leave Shopify? |
| Customer data | Which details are provided for a direct-checkout order? |
| Analytics | Which client-side events do not fire in an external checkout? |
| Policies | Which merchant terms govern the purchase, return, and post-purchase service? |
| Channel controls | Who can enable Catalog access or direct checkout? |
Read Shopify’s current data sharing and privacy documentation and the supplemental terms before approval.
7. Use Shopify’s reports and preview as diagnostics
Shopify currently documents channel-level reporting for sales, orders, online-store sessions, and online-store conversion. Sales can combine referral-based transactions and direct-checkout transactions, so interpret the metric in the context of the channel’s purchase path.
The search preview in Sales channels → Agentic shows raw Shopify Catalog search output. Shopify warns that external channels can rerank those results, so the preview is a directional diagnostic rather than a forecast of exactly what a shopper will see.
Use it to investigate:
- products that are missing or grouped incorrectly;
- incomplete descriptions, images, variants, or policies;
- queries where the product is relevant but not competitive in Catalog output;
- differences between Catalog output and the live channel;
- channel traffic that cannot be reconciled with checkout or analytics data.
Shopify currently says Agentic Storefronts performance analytics are not available for headless stores. Teams using a headless storefront need a separate measurement plan rather than assuming the Shopify report covers the full path.
The merchant-readiness review
Do not score readiness with arbitrary traffic, conversion, or catalog thresholds. Approve the configuration when the team can produce evidence for each operational area.
| Area | Evidence to collect before approval |
|---|---|
| Eligibility | Current admin status and channel requirements |
| Product truth | Sampled variant records that match product page and checkout |
| Catalog mapping | Confirmed source for custom fields, options, and product grouping |
| Policies | Current published policies and product-specific exceptions |
| Checkout | Test orders covering required discounts, delivery, consent, and app behavior |
| Privacy | Reviewed terms and documented data flow |
| Analytics | Known reporting coverage and gaps for referral and direct checkout |
| Ownership | Named owner for channel settings, product data, and incident response |
| Change control | A record of what was enabled, tested, and rechecked |
If discovery is correct but checkout is not, keep discovery active where the channel permits it and redirect purchases to the online store while the team resolves the checkout gap. If product or policy data is incorrect, fix the source record before treating channel visibility as the problem.
The tradeoff is channel-specific
Merchant checkout keeps the purchase on the merchant’s own configured checkout and brand surface. Direct checkout can reduce the number of surfaces a shopper crosses, but it may not include every app, pixel, block, delivery method, or account requirement used on the merchant site.
Neither path is universally better. The setup decision should follow the product, shopper location, checkout dependencies, measurement needs, and merchant control requirements.
